Diamond Engagement Rings: Basic Guide in Cutting and Polishing

February 15, 2020 //  by Rachel

Diamonds don’t come in perfect shapes. Most of the time they need to undergo cutting and polishing. Diamonds that don’t have the familiar shiny appearance are “raw diamonds”.

Does it make a difference when the diamonds undergo the polishing process or not? What is the process all about? Is a diamond that’s polished better?

Before you decide on the kind of engagement ring diamond to use, know your stones well. Below, is more information on why diamonds go through polishing and cutting processes.

Why Cutting and Polishing Diamonds Are Important

Raw and polished diamonds are easy to spot. One is rough and the other is more brilliant and has defined sides. “I can always go and ask jewelers near me” you might think. This is a good idea since you can learn more when you decide to ask experts for information.

Almost all engagement diamonds sold in shops are already cut and polished. But they come in raw forms first. The jeweler then cuts and polishes them before releasing it to the customers. They do this because of the following reasons:

  • Diamond cutting creates certain shapes. They make the diamond look symmetrical. This makes it easier for jewelers to fit the diamonds in necklaces and rings.
  • It’s more convenient for jewelers to meet customer demands. Since everyone is looking for something different, having a variety of shapes helps. This is why diamonds are then cut into standard and conventional shapes.
  • Brilliance is also important. Cutting and polishing diamonds helps increase the stone’s brilliance. The more light it reflects, the more people want to buy them.

What Happens When You Cut and Polish a Diamond?

  1. Cleaving the diamond

This process is the cutting, splitting or dividing of the diamonds. This means taking smaller parts of diamonds from the bigger part. In this way getting the desired shape from the diamond is easier.

  1. Bruiting the diamond

This is a technique to shape the diamond. Using a diamond cutter, the diamonds are being rubbed together to get the shape.

  1. Polishing the diamond

When the desired shape comes out, the diamond needs to shine. This is where each facet of the diamond is then polished to look smooth and bright. The goal of polishing is to achieve different levels of shine required

.

  1. Diamond Inspection

This process is also known as quality control. The diamonds undergo checking to see if they meet the specifications of the manufacturer. If the diamonds still need retouches they get sent back.

Maximizing the Diamond Engagement Ring’s Value

A well polished and cut diamond engagement ring will have more value. Other factors that affect this are the weight, clarity, and proportion of the stone. It’s not the easiest of tasks to do, but the results are worth it.
